Annie Oakley

A store-bought vintage card showing Annie Oakley, whom I'm always thought was wonderful because she grew up in Ohio like I did and had curly hair like I do.  I read a biography of her when I was 9 or 10 and wanted to be able to shoot squirrels in the head like she did, but we weren't a hunting family.

By the way, when Daniel Boone went squirrel hunting, he did something called "barking."  Instead of shooting the squirrels, he shot the tree, and as the bark fell off the squirrels came down with it.  I don't think the fall would have killed them, so he must have --what? Stomped on them?  Knocked them in the head with a rock?  History so often leaves out the important, and also grisly, details that surround its heroes.
