A tree grows in Grace. 4 x 6. Paper, fabric, embroidery.

Part of the It's Only a Book project, in which I'm deconstructing my 2003 book, Grace: A Memoir, and turning it into art. To Mejaka in Idaho.

You did it!

I got your wonderful card today and was thrilled to see you'd taken the first hard step. The rest is going to be terrific fun! I've been looking over the other cards you've been making and enjoying all of them. Interesting to read your thoughts about the use of text in art.

I'll tell you a cute story, if you don't mind. My daughter turned 8 in January, and shortly afterwards her eldest brother and father had words that resulted in his moving out.

Every week we gather as a family for some serious discussion, treats, and games. We take turns leading different segments of the evening. In February, just after Seth moved out, it was Anna's turn to lead the "lesson" portion of our family night, and she wanted to do something about love. She came up with the following plan entirely by herself (ordering me NOT to help her)...We first made collages of ourselves, just simple human figures on black paper. Then she had us trim around them with scissors so that they had just a tiny black border, and she arranged them on a piece of construction paper like a family portrait.

She then asked me to send the collage to Seth, so he would know we loved him.

The only way this links to the text-as-art is that I cut my hair from some text against yellow background, text featuring words and phrases I hoped would remind our boy of some of the more important things we tried to teach him... :^ )

So glad you like your piece of the puzzle, mejaka. That first r-i-i-i-p was the tough one. Now I'm engaged with how the art and text are working together and the process of creation. Thanks again for your encouragement!
